A new year is a great time to reset. During this time I look to look through my library of cookbooks to find some old favorites and/or new recipes to add into my weekly rotation. I’ve collected some great ones over the years, so I wanted to share my best healthy cookbooks with you! Some are healthier than others, but they all focus on whole foods, eating a more plant-forward diet, and great flavors.
Lunch! by Olivia Mack McCool
Looking to save some coin in 2021 from your Sweetgreen and/or Flower Child addiction? Lunch is an amazing cookbook that helps you meal plan and schedule out 10 separate weeks of workday lunches that are complex, delicious, filling, and healthy! Literally just like Sweetgreen. Don’t be too afraid at week 1 where you buy a TON of ingredients – you’ll use them consistently in the following weeks. Also each week has a theme (Asian/Italian/Mexican, etc). Trust the process. Eat deliciously.
Recipe Highlights: Ginger Chicken Meatballs // Farro Porridge with Yogurt and Caramelized Apples
Editor’s Note: Porter and Mepal (click the photos below for more info) make great reusable containers to transport your lunch bowls.
Ancient Grains for Modern Meals & Simply Ancient Grains by Maria Speck
You GUYS – if you buy 1 book from this list, make it “Ancient Grains for Modern Meals”. This book changed my life! Out of this list of my best healthy cookbooks, this one is my hands-down favorite. I’ve also added the second book by Maria Speck because like it’s predecessor, EVERY SINGLE RECIPE IS AMAZING!
But Maria urges in her books to not call her ‘healthy’. Her recipes aren’t diet-culture, they’re focused on whole foods, whole grains and traditional Greek-based recipes. Every single recipe I’ve tried is absolutely amazing and I make often.
Recipe Highlights: Couscous with Orange Scented Mascarpone // Floating Sesame Loaf (a super easy way to make yeasted bread)
The Sprouted Kitchen by Sara Forte
If you haven’t bookmarked The Sprouted Kitchen blog in your favorites yet, you’ll be happy if you do. This is her first cookbook with her best recipes that are whole-foods based and largely vegetarian. And did I mention delicious?
Recipe Highlights: Asian Tofu Tacos with Hoisin Slaw // Creamy Millet with Roasted Portobellos // Lentil Meatballs with Lemon Pesto (my go-to summer recipe)
Editors Note: For the Lentil Meatballs – use Trader Joe’s precooked lentils in the salad section. Time saver and the consistency is creamier than making my own.
Eat Clean Play Dirty by Danielle Duboise and Whitney Tingle
I very badly want to try Sakara’s Total Body Reset which includes a meal plan, daily workouts, and even treat-yo-self gifts. The package is very expensive, and I personally haven’t been able to pull the tigger on it. A great way to enjoy the Sakara lifestyle on a budget is through their cookbook! The recipes are plant-based, gluten free, and dairy-free so if you have food allergies, this would be a good recipe resource for you!
Recipe highlights: Creamy Cauliflower Soup // Sexy Cinnamon Rolls // Strawberry + Coconut Cream Doughnuts
Editor’s Note: Be sure to subscribe to Sakara’s emails and check out their blog – they drop free recipes there!
Thug Kitchen by Thug Kitchen
Not only does this cookbook have amazing and flavorful recipes, but it’s hilarious to read! Not for children, this book drops the ‘f-bomb’ constantly and it’s amazing. All the recipes are plant-based and DELICIOUS. If you have an aversion to vegetables (or have a friend/partner who does) this cookbook is perfect for eating a more plant-forward diet.
Recipe Highlights: Baked Marinated Tofu (I make this once a week) // Roasted Beer & Lime Cauliflower Tacos
The Meat Lover’s Meatless Celebrations by Kim O’Donnel
Another great healthy cookbook to help reduce the amount of meat in you diet without skimping on taste. This cookbook focuses on meals for celebratory gatherings (Thanksgiving/Christmas/4th of July, etc.) that are meatless and absolute crowd pleasers.
Recipe Highlights: Roasted Red Onions with Pumpkin-Rosemary Stuffing and Root Vegetable Gravy // Delectica Boats with Red Rice Stuffing // Carrot Fennel Soup
Do you have any cooking goals in 2021? Share them below in the comments! Also, in my opinion these are the best healthy cookbooks, but if I’ve missed any let me know! I’m always looking to expand my collection. 😊
